The 1916 Northern Pacific Depot
Recognized by the National Register of Historic Places as a significant local landmark, the depot was built in 1916 and features Mission Revival architecture, complete with a scalloped red tile roof. The town of Aitkin grew to about 2000 residents in the early 1900s. Demand for a larger depot to handle the passenger traffic eventually forced Northern Pacific to replace their older and smaller building that had been built in the late 1800s. The present structure was used until the 1960s, when passenger service was finally discontinued. The Aitkin County Historical Society acquired the depot as their new headquarters and museum in 1972. |
