History of the original Log Museum

Year Event
1949 The cornerstone was laid on Octtober 12, 1949 on the southeast corner of the Aitkin County Courthouse yard for a 24' x 26' log building
1950 Logs for the museum were furnished by Cecil Weingarner
1951 On July 1, 1951, meetings of the Society were begun in the building, and artifacts were accumulated.
1970 The Society was asked to moved due to new Family Services building needing the space.
1973 The Log Museum was moved to the National Guard Armory site (next to the Depot) by Matt Tibbetts at a cost of $400.
1980 A 24' x 24' foot addition to the Log Museum was requested.
1980 The Log Museum and the Depot Museum were renovated. The cost to re-roof the Log Museum is $15,436.55
1990s The Log Museum was re-roofed and work was done on the log structure.
2000
  • May - ACHS received a letter from the owner of the Armory to move the Log Museum in 90 days, which was by August 17, 2000.
  • July - Quotes were acquired.
  • August - Matt Tibbetts would do two moves for $5000 - $4000 to the temporary site west of the Dpot Museum and $1000 for the final move. But where to go for the final site?
  • September 27 - A motion was made by the Trustees of the Historical Society to move the cabin to the Aitkin County Fairgrounds, south of the Senior Building, near the barns.
  • October 1 - Approval was needed from the Fair Board. Yes or No?
  • October 2 - The Aitkin Country Fair Board approves the move. The Keller Foundation contributes $5000 to pay for the move
  • October 3 - TAitkin Conty Board approves the move and agrees to contribute a maximum of $4,000 to pay for materials and electric hook- up.
  • November - The Log Museum building is now located at the Aitkin County Fair grounds, preserved for future historical displays. Back addition to Log cabin given to Fair board to use as storage building.
